Electronic Drawing Conversion
Dassnagar has converted thousands of paper drawings to
electronic editable CAD format. In the case of tax maps, the
drawings are frequently translated and rotated to represent the
true world location of the properties in question which may be
viewed in conjunction with other similarly referenced features
and imagery in a GIS setting.
Why CAD converted files and not paper drawings or image formats?
The content of a paper drawing may be preserved by
creating an electronic scanned image of the document. This is
all that is necessary for documents that need to be preserved
for historical significance. But what about all those drawings
that undergo periodic revision and updates? For these instances,
an electronic CAD version of the drawing is the only solution.
We generally follow three types of drawing conversion methods:
Precision redraw
Professional draftsmen read the dimensions, bearings, distances, or
coordinates from an original drawing and create a precise
CAD or GIS model to the specified dimensions. Accuracy is
limited only by the information on the original
documentation - even here, missing information may be
derived or incorrect data corrected by Architects and
Engineers. Experienced professionals involved in every
step of the process ensure that anomalies are corrected as
the conversion is performed. Complex interpretation of
source documents can also be accomplished based on the
requirements of the project. This is the most time
consuming and costly method of conversion.
Tracing - standard heads-up digitization
The operator re-creates each drawing from the original raster
image by tracing the original drawing. The result will
look almost exactly like the original and if compared on a
light table, they will register closely. Accuracy is
limited by, operator proficiency, the equipment and the
quality of the original image. This
method is used where the original is a scaled drawing
without dimensions such as topographic maps. The

Automatic Conversion Enhancement
This method uses a scanner to create a raster image of the drawing and then
uses a software application to convert the raster image to
a vector image. A professional review of each document is
necessary in making appropriate revisions. There are many
quality issues involved in automated conversion.
